Rosetta Stone has gone through bankruptcy (2020) and restructuring. The company survived because of subscription revenue. While Version 3 is abandonware in the sense that it's no longer sold, the intellectual property inside (the thousands of proprietary photos and audio recordings) is still owned by IXL Learning (parent company).
As a learning tool, v3 is 80% as effective as the modern version. The core immersion method (images + audio + text) hasn't changed. However, you lose mobile learning, live practice, and modern speech recognition. For a beginner on a $0 budget, v3 is still useful. For anyone serious about fluency, pay for the new version. rosetta stone v3 english american l1 l5 free
