Instead, the horror is grounded entirely in human cruelty and institutional corruption. The story follows Witchfinder Count Cumberland (Herbert Lom) and his apprentice, Christian (Udo Kier). While Cumberland uses the witch hunts as a cynical cash grab to fund his decadent lifestyle, Christian initially believes in the righteousness of their cause—until he falls for a village girl (Olivia Pascal) targeted by a rival’s false accusation.
