“She kept a journal,” Rae said. “Only we didn’t know how often.” Rae glanced at the window, where the day had turned tenser, the clouds folding. “I found these in her studio after she—” Rae stopped, swallowed. “You weren’t here when she went out two weeks ago. You missed the visit to the county library—June checked out six books on local folklore and maritime histories. Then last week she took a walk to the quarry. She said she was going to take pictures. And then—” Rae’s breath shuddered. “She was gone for two days. Came back, rattled. Didn’t want to say where she’d been. Said she needed space.”

Everyone knew the Gabres place. Burned down ten years ago. No one rebuilt. No one ever said why. “You weren’t here when she went out two weeks ago
