This narrative device—the "invisible protagonist"—is risky. It requires the audience to fall in love with a character they haven't seen yet. But the film pulls it off with aplomb. As Tessa tracks him down, the film introduces a cavalcade of characters: a guilt-ridden criminal, a lonely grandmother, a tragic lover. Each of them holds a piece of Charlie. He is a fixer, a listener, and a muse. He interferes in lives not to dominate them, but to nudge them toward their own redemption.
