The Guru Granth Sahib was compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, in 1604. He gathered the hymns and teachings of the previous Sikh Gurus and other spiritual leaders, and added his own compositions. The scripture was then installed in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, where it remains to this day.
