During the filming of a scene where Jackie jumps from a castle wall onto a tree branch, the branch broke. He fell 20 feet, landing head-first on a rock, suffering a fractured skull and brain damage. He underwent emergency trepanation (drilling a hole in the skull to relieve pressure). This near-death experience made the film legendary – and the final cut still contains the failed take.
